Supported independent living is the support most tied to place. It needs workers who live near enough to turn up reliably, at hours that suit you, for years. Across regional Victoria that varies from workable to genuinely impossible depending on the town, and any provider giving you a confident answer without asking where you live is not being straight with you.
Gencare has homes in Melbourne’s west and care hubs in Ballarat and, developing, Geelong. Beyond those, we do not have local teams, and we will not take a SIL referral in a town where we could not sustain the roster. Doing so and then rearranging it later is worse than declining at the start.
What is worth having regardless is a clear view of what SIL actually is, what your plan would fund, and how to judge whichever provider does operate near you. Most people are never given that, and it is the difference between choosing a provider and accepting the only one who returned a call.
Four questions worth asking any SIL provider
How many different workers will come through the house in a month, and what happens when one leaves? Continuity is the single largest determinant of whether supported living works, and providers who cannot answer this precisely usually have a reason.
Who chooses the housemates, and what happens if it does not work out? Is the tenancy tied to the support — meaning changing provider means moving house? And what does the roster look like at 3am on a Sunday, which is when the difference between providers is most obvious and least advertised?

Supported Independent Living in Regional Victoria, answered
In Melbourne’s west and across Ballarat and the Goldfields, yes. In Geelong and the Barwon our team is being built. Beyond those, generally no — and we will tell you that rather than take a referral we could not sustain. Tell us your town and you will get a specific answer rather than a general one.
How many different workers come through in a month and what happens when one leaves; who chooses the housemates and what happens if it does not work; whether the tenancy is tied to the support; and what the roster actually looks like overnight and at weekends. Vague answers to any of those are the answer.
Sometimes not, and it is better to establish that early than after a year of trying. Where workers cannot reliably reach you, the useful conversation shifts to what else could meet the same need — more support in a family home, different hours, or in some cases relocating, which is a serious decision and should never be a casual suggestion.
No. All seven Gencare homes are in Melbourne’s west, and none are SDA-registered. In Ballarat we deliver SIL in homes participants choose themselves, which keeps your tenancy independent of your provider — an arrangement worth considering wherever you are.
