Most people arrive at supported independent living from the wrong end. They start by looking for a house, when the question that actually decides everything is what someone wants their ordinary Tuesday to look like — what they want to do themselves, what they want a hand with, and what they would rather never think about again.
SIL is the support, not the building. It is the person who is there at seven in the morning, the help with a meal or a medication, the someone-in-the-house overnight if that is what safety requires. It can happen in a share house, in a unit somebody already rents, or in a family home where the arrangement is changing. Getting that distinction clear early saves people months of looking at the wrong things.
In Geelong and across the Barwon, that framing matters more than it does in the city, because there is simply less to choose from. Working out precisely what you need — before you start ringing around — is what turns a thin market into a workable one.
What supported independent living actually involves
Support is built around what a person genuinely needs, so no two arrangements look the same. Depending on individual needs it might be a couple of hours a day, or someone on site around the clock. It might be short-term while things settle, or a long-standing arrangement that quietly makes a life possible.
What it is not is a package you are slotted into. The NDIS funds SIL against assessed need, and the honest version of this conversation involves working out what that need actually is — which is a different exercise from picking a service off a list.

Regional workforces are thinner and turnover hurts more. Continuity is the thing worth holding out for, and we would rather build it slowly than fill a roster fast.
Distance is planned, not ignored
Geelong to Colac is not a city commute. Travel time goes into the roster from the start, because a plan that ignores it falls apart in week three.
Coordination reaches before we do
Support Coordination works by phone and video and is not tied to a local roster. It is usually what can start first, and often what unlocks the rest.
Out here, the difference between good support and bad support is usually just whether the same person comes back next week.

Gencare is expanding into Geelong and the Barwon rather than established here. That changes what we can commit to, so here it is plainly rather than buried in a footnote.

No. Every home Gencare runs is in Melbourne’s west — Deanside, Albion, Fraser Rise, Melton, Cobblebank, St Albans and Tarneit. There is no Gencare property in Geelong or the Barwon, and we would rather tell you that in the first sentence than let you work it out three calls in. What we can do is help you look at what does exist here, including housing run by other providers.
Quite a lot of the part that matters. Support Coordination can start now and is not tied to a local roster — that covers working out whether SIL suits you, what your plan can fund, and how to approach the housing question. We are actively recruiting local support workers for hands-on supports, and a referral made now gets matched first as that team grows.
Often, yes, and it is overlooked more than it should be. SIL is the support, not the building — so if you are already renting somewhere that works, or living in a family home where the arrangement needs to change, the question is whether the right support can be built around that address rather than whether you need to move. Sometimes moving is genuinely the better answer. Sometimes it is not, and nobody has asked.
We will not give you a date we cannot keep. We are recruiting across Geelong and the Bellarine now, and how quickly it comes together depends on finding people who genuinely live here rather than drive down for a shift. What we can tell you honestly is where your enquiry sits, and what is realistic for the kind of support you need — at the Meet and Greet, not after you have signed something.
No, and confusing the two costs people time. SIL is funding for the support a person receives; SDA is funding for a purpose-built home designed around high physical or behavioural needs. They are separate parts of a plan and most people who have SIL do not have SDA. None of Gencare’s homes are SDA-registered dwellings, so if your plan is built around SDA we will tell you plainly that we are not the housing answer — and help you look for one that is.
