The funding people lose without noticing

Short-Term Accommodation funding is among the most commonly underspent parts of an NDIS plan. It sits there for twelve months, feels complicated to arrange, and quietly expires — and the household that needed a break most never got one. In regional areas where options are fewer, that pattern is worse.

Understanding what the funding actually covers is not a small thing. STA pays for the support, and where relevant the accommodation and meals, for a short break — commonly up to fourteen days at a time. It can be a stay somewhere else, or a worker covering at home. A lot of families discover the second option years later than they should have.

Gencare cannot deliver respite in the Loddon yet — no local team, no accommodation. But making sure you know what you have and how to use it before it expires costs nothing and is worth doing regardless of who ends up providing it.

Straight answers

What we can do about respite here today

Respite is the support where a vague answer does the most damage, because families ask about it when they are already close to the edge.

Starts now

  • Explain exactly what your STA funding covers, and what it cannot be spent on
  • Help you find and approach respite providers operating in central Victoria now
  • Plan respite into the year through coordination, so it is booked before it becomes urgent
  • Register your interest for when our local team starts

Not yet

  • Provide respite ourselves anywhere in Bendigo or the Loddon
  • Offer accommodation here — our short-term accommodation is at Deanside, in Melbourne’s west
  • Take an urgent or emergency respite request in this region

The most common outcome for a respite budget is that nobody uses it and everybody needed it.

Questions

Respite & Short-Term Accommodation in Bendigo & Loddon, answered

Not yet. We have no local team and no accommodation in the Loddon, and our short-term accommodation is at Deanside in Melbourne’s west, which is not a sensible trip from central Victoria for a few nights. What we can do is help you find providers who are already operating here.

The support, and where relevant the accommodation and meals, for a short break — commonly up to fourteen days at a time. It covers a stay somewhere else or a worker covering at home. It does not cover ongoing daily support, and if that is what you actually need, the conversation should be about a different part of your plan.

We can help you understand what it covers and find a provider in central Victoria who could use it before it lapses. We cannot deliver it ourselves here. If the timeframe is genuinely tight, say so when you call — it changes what advice is useful.

It is a legitimate use of the funding and often the more practical one regionally, but not something we can staff in the Loddon yet. Any provider with support workers in central Victoria may be able to, and that is a useful thing to ask about specifically, since a lot of families are only ever offered facility stays.
