Respite and short-term accommodation in Geelong and the Barwon.
We do not have a respite house in the Barwon. Here is what respite can still look like, and what we can genuinely help with.
Respite is not only a building
When people picture respite they picture going somewhere. That is one version and it is the one everybody knows about. The other version happens at home: a support worker comes in for a weekend, or a few evenings, or a week of overnights, and the household gets a genuine break without anybody packing a bag.
In-home respite is often the better fit anyway, particularly for someone who finds unfamiliar places difficult, and particularly in a region where the nearest facility might be an hour away. Nothing about the routine changes except who is doing it.
The part we will not blur: Gencare has no respite accommodation in Geelong or the Barwon. Our short-term accommodation runs from the Deanside home in Melbourne’s west, which is a long way to send someone for a break. If a facility-based stay is what you need here, the useful thing we can do is help you find one.
What respite & short-term accommodation in Geelong & Barwon actually looks like
The break can come to you
A worker in the house for a weekend achieves what a facility stay achieves, without the travel or the unfamiliar bed.
Finding what is local
Where a facility stay is genuinely the right answer, coordination can help you find and book one — including with providers who are not us.
Carers count too
Sustained caring without breaks ends one of two ways. Planning respite before you need it is not indulgent, it is maintenance.
The carer who never gets a break is the support arrangement most likely to end badly, and the one nobody funds until it does.

Respite & Short-Term Accommodation in Geelong & Barwon, answered
No. Our short-term accommodation runs from the Deanside home near Caroline Springs, in Melbourne’s west, which is not a realistic place to send someone from the Barwon for a few nights. If facility-based respite is what you need here, the genuinely useful thing we can do is help you find and book somewhere local — including with providers who are not us.
A support worker comes to you rather than the person going away. It might be a weekend, a run of evenings, or overnight cover for a week. The household gets an actual break and nothing about the routine, the bed or the surroundings changes. For a lot of people, particularly anyone who finds unfamiliar places hard, it works better than going somewhere.
It should be, and in a region with fewer options it matters more. Respite booked three months ahead is nearly always available; respite needed on Thursday often is not. Planning it into the year — school holidays, a family event, or just a scheduled fortnight — is the single most effective thing a carer can do with an STA budget.
Yes. Where we cannot deliver something ourselves, telling you who can is the only honest version of the job. In the Barwon that is currently the case for facility-based respite, and pretending otherwise would waste your time and your funding.
