Respite and short-term accommodation across metropolitan Melbourne.

Two ways to get a break: somewhere to go, or somebody to take over at home. Which one suits depends on the person, not the postcode.

The break that works is the one that gets used

Respite budgets go unspent more often than almost any other part of a plan. Not because families do not need a break — they need it desperately — but because arranging one is effortful, the first attempt often goes badly, and after that nobody tries again. A support that is theoretically funded and practically unused helps no one.

Getting it right usually comes down to matching the format to the person. Some people genuinely enjoy going somewhere: a change of scene, different company, a few days that are theirs. Others find an unfamiliar bed so disruptive that the household spends the following week recovering from the break.

Across Melbourne we can offer both. Stays away happen at our Deanside home near Caroline Springs, in the west — a real four-bedroom house with photographs on the site. In-home respite, where a worker takes over at your place, can be arranged more widely across the metro depending on who we have near you.

What can start now

Stays at Deanside can be booked with reasonable notice, and school holidays fill first. In-home respite depends on workers near you, which is quickest in the west and the established suburbs and slower out in the growth corridors.

In everyday terms

What support can look like

Examples, not a menu. Support is built around what each person actually needs, so nobody receives all of this and plenty of people need something not listed here.

The routine comes too

Medication times, meals, the order of the morning. A stay that ignores those is not restful for anybody.

Familiar faces where possible

Meeting the workers beforehand turns a first night from an ordeal into something ordinary.

Worth having in itself

An outing, the pool, or a quiet few days with the football on — depending entirely on what the person actually enjoys.

You get told what happened

What went well and what did not. Enough detail that you can stop checking your phone and actually rest.

On the ground here

What respite & short-term accommodation in Melbourne actually looks like

A stay in a real house

Deanside, in the west. An ordinary home with a kitchen and a garden, not a facility with a visitor sign-in.

Or a break at your place

A worker covers evenings, a weekend or a run of overnights, and nothing about the routine or the bed changes.

Booked before it is needed

Planned respite is nearly always available. Urgent respite frequently is not, anywhere in the city.

An unspent respite budget is not a saving. It is usually a family who tried once and never again.

Melbourne questions

Respite & Short-Term Accommodation in Melbourne, answered

At our Deanside home near Caroline Springs, in Melbourne’s west. It is a four-bedroom single-storey house with wide doorframes and undercover parking with direct access, and there are photographs of every room on the site so you can see it before ringing. Our other six homes are configured for permanent living rather than short stays.

Honestly, often not for a weekend — an hour each way eats a short break. For families further from the west, in-home respite usually makes more sense, and where a stay away is genuinely what is needed we would rather help you find something closer than have you drive across the city for two nights.

As far as you reasonably can. Respite planned into the year is nearly always available; respite needed this week frequently is not, and school holidays go first everywhere in Melbourne. The most useful thing you can do with an STA budget is decide when you will use it before you are desperate.

It is one of the most useful things it does. A few nights answers questions that months of family discussion cannot, and because nothing is committed it costs nothing but the funding to find out. Several people now living in our western homes started with exactly that.
