Innovative Community Participation, when the usual options do not fit.
Not everyone is served by a standard group program. Innovative Community Participation is different: a creative, individualised path built entirely around your goals — to grow skills, confidence and connection, and often to open a door toward work, study or a fuller life.

Doing it
When the group program is not where you shine.
Standard group activities work brilliantly for many people. But not for everyone. For some, a busy group is overwhelming, or simply not aligned with where they want to go — and being placed in one anyway can feel like being told your goals do not count.
The result is people quietly stuck: capable and motivated, but without a program that actually fits their interests, their pace or their ambitions.
Innovative Community Participation exists for exactly this. A creative, individually designed path — built around who you are and what you want to move toward.
Your goals are not too unusual to support. They just need a program imaginative enough to meet them.
Not a program you join. One built for you.
Individually designed
Not an off-the-shelf group — a program shaped around your specific interests, strengths and goals.
Creative by nature
When the usual pathways do not fit, we find new ones — flexible, imaginative and genuinely yours.
Goal-directed
Every activity moves you toward something real — independence, a skill, a role, a purpose.
Capacity-building
The aim is to grow you — skills and confidence that open doors and last well beyond the program.
A few pathways we have built.
Illustrative examples — yours would be designed entirely around your goals.
Toward work
Building the skills, routines and confidence — and real experience — that become a bridge into employment.
Toward a craft or passion
An individual program around art, music, making or a special interest — turning a passion into growth and connection.
Toward purpose & contribution
Volunteering, mentoring or community projects designed around you — finding meaning and belonging.
This is likely a good fit if…
- Standard group activities do not quite fit you.
- You want a creative, individually designed program.
- You are working toward independence, work or study.
- You have specific interests or goals that deserve a tailored path.
Something else may suit if…
- You want mainstream group activities and outings — see Community & Social Participation.
- You mainly need travel support — see Travel & Transport.
- You want broad everyday skill-building — see Life Skills Development.
How this is funded
Innovative Community Participation is funded as a flexible, individualised form of community participation. Here is the plain-English version.
Funded from: Core Supports, as an innovative form of community participation.
Flexible: Designed around your goals rather than a fixed group program.
Often a bridge: Frequently used as a stepping stone toward work, study or independence.
Led by you: Your interests and goals shape the whole program.
Innovative Community Participation, answered
It is a creative, individually designed form of community participation for people whose goals are not well served by standard group activities. Instead of a fixed program, we build something around your interests, strengths and goals — to grow skills, confidence and connection, and often as a bridge toward work, study or greater independence.
Standard Community Participation is often about accessing activities, groups and outings. Innovative Community Participation is more individualised and creative — a tailored program designed around your specific goals, frequently focused on building capacity toward a bigger step like employment or study.
Often, yes. Many people use it to build the skills, routines, confidence and real experience that become a genuine bridge into employment, education or greater independence. The whole design is goal-directed.
Yes — it is funded from your Core Supports budget as an innovative form of community participation. We help you design a program that genuinely moves you toward your goals.
It starts with a Meet & Greet to understand who you are, what you love and where you want to go. From there we co-design a program with you — choosing activities and steps that build toward your goal — and we review and adjust it as you grow, so it always fits.
Yes. Innovative Community Participation is individualised by nature, so it is often delivered one-to-one or in very small, purposeful settings — exactly the point, when a busy standard group is not the right fit for you.
Gencare is based in the west of Melbourne and supports participants across Victoria, with our footprint expanding into Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo and regional areas. Reach out and we will confirm what is available in your area.
It is funded from Capacity Building, so it needs to connect to a goal in your plan — building skills, growing confidence, working toward study or employment. That is a lower bar than it sounds: if standard group programs have not worked for you and there is something you are trying to move toward, there is usually a case to be made. We can help you make it.
Because it is capacity-building, it is measured against your goal, not attendance. We agree at the start what progress would look like for you — a skill gained, confidence to do something alone, a step toward work or study — and review it honestly as we go. If a pathway is not moving you forward, we change it rather than continue it.
Yes. An individual pathway can run alongside a group activity, daily living support or anything else in your plan. For a lot of people the individualised program is what makes a group setting workable — building the confidence or the skills that let them take part in the group at all.
Supports that pair well
The myths about innovative participation — and the truth.
This support is widely misunderstood, so it goes unused. Tap each one to see the truth.
Individual pathways across Melbourne and Victoria.
An individual pathway is built out of what is actually around you — the local business, the class down the road, the volunteering that leads somewhere. These are the regions our teams work in today.
Not seeing your area? Ask anyway — coverage is still expanding, and we would rather have the conversation than have you assume the answer is no. Tell us where you are and we will give you an honest answer about what is available near you.
Let's design a path that's genuinely yours.
A warm, no-pressure Meet & Greet — we listen first, you decide everything. A real person replies within ~2 hours.
