NDIS Transport Funding and NDIS Travel Allowance

NDIS Transport Support in General: What is it?

Movement and access to travel facilities hold an important aspect of any participant’s life. This is well understood by NDIS, and hence, there is support in each plan. NDIS transportation covers the funding and services that help participants travel safely to appointments, workplaces, and community activities.

Depending on the participant and their personal needs and situation. This could include funding for a support worker to drive them around, training to use public transport, or even a vehicle change. It is now time to understand each of them separately, NDIS Transport Funding and NDIS Travel Allowance.

NDIS Transport Funding, Understand it better!

To know exactly how this works, you can always reach out to Gencare. We have our NDIS travel support worker who can help you out with understanding the Travel support plan. This funding helps participants who can’t use public transport independently. It’s mainly for those who don’t receive support from a funded support worker for their transport needs.

The three levels of NDIS transport funding according to the frequency of the need of the participants:

Level 1 (Low needs): Up to $1,606 per year, for participants who don’t work or attend programs regularly.

Level 2 (Medium needs): Up to $2,472 per year, for those who work or attend day programs up to 2 days a week.

Level 3 (High needs): Up to $3,456 per year, for participants who work, study, or attend programs most days of the week.

How and what am I paying this for?

NDIS transport funding is usually provided as regular payments directly to your bank account. You can then use these funds to pay for:

  • Taxis or community transport services
  • Ride-share options like Uber (if available in your plan)
  • Private drivers or registered transport providers

Knowing about The NDIS Travel Allowance

NDIS transport funding supports your travel. This travel allowance is designed to cover the costs your support workers incur while travelling to and from you — for example, when they drive to your home or accompany you to appointments.

It’s a way for providers to get the refund for their time and expenses while giving supports that require travel. Get our help through our NDIS travel support worker to make sure your travel is stress-free.

How does this NDIS Travel Allowance work?

If you choose Gencare as your NDIS support service provider, we can claim this allowance under your plan. However, we need to see these two aspects carefully before doing so:

  • The travel is necessary for delivering the support listed in your plan.
  • The provider follows NDIS price guide rules and keeps proper travel records.

For example:

If your support worker drives you to your therapy session, the NDIS travel allowance covers their time and kilometres. If you pay a transport company to take you somewhere, your NDIS transport funding pays for that trip. Both are travel-related supports; however, as you can see, they serve very different purposes.

Get The Fullest from your NDIS Travel Support

Here are a few practical ways to get the best out of your NDIS transport funding and NDIS travel allowance:

  • Review your travel goals during planning meetings. Be clear about where and how often you need to travel. This helps determine your funding level.
  • Keep records and receipts. This will make sure you track your expenses and manage your funding wisely.
  • Ask your provider to explain their travel policies. Every NDIS service provider (including Gencare) should clarify how they claim travel costs.
  • Explore travel training. If suitable, NDIS can fund training to help you use public transport confidently and independently.
  • Combine supports smartly. Some participants use transport funding along with community participation supports for greater flexibility.
